I see Sylvie sitting sideways out of the back of the policeman's car, her feet drumming on the wet pavement as she talks. I can see it-the rain-slicked road and the flashing lights of ambulance and police cars cutting through the darkness of night, warning those passing by: catastrophe has struck here, please drive slowly. What they do not know, the cause of the argument, is crucial to the story of me. The story lurking underneath and in between the facts of the one they can see. What they do not know is that there is another story. It is, in other people's opinions, not important to the story. no one ever says what they were arguing about. In a few weeks, Finny would be turning nineteen. It was raining, of course, and with his girlfriend, Sylvie Whitehouse, he glided through the rain in the red car his father had given him on his sixteenth birthday. I WASN'T WITH FINNY ON THAT AUGUST NIGHT, but my imagination has burned the scene in my mind so that it feels like a memory.

In these stories, Dayan asks readers to envision another political life, a reorientation of our ways of seeing and thinking, to examine our ethical and conceptual assumptions from the perspective of other creatures, to imagine an alternative way of being in the world, of thinking and loving. Famed Southern war horses ridden by Civil War generals, doomed Spanish fighting bulls, the misunderstood possum hunted by generations of Southerners, and the chickens slaughtered by family servants-these animals frame and inform a haunting picture of a doomed childhood in a riven society. Examining memories, family documents, and photographs, Animal Quintet takes a raw look at racial tensions and bourgeois respectability in a region struggling to change. In this haunting, lyrical, luminous book, Colin Dayan meditates on her family history, her relationship with animals, and her upbringing in the South. A book that you can get lost in for weeks. The youngest we get is nine for Madeline. The book is written with each chapter jumping around to either a different age in Madeline's life, or else an entry from the journal of an ancestor, Lisbeth Usher. You see all the Ushers die young, and usually are quite insane, or on their way to being completely insane by the time of their death. They live in the Usher mansion with their father and mother, as well as a team of doctors there to study the curse, and supposedly to find a cure for it. Our main character is Madeline Usher, who has a twin brother named Roderick. Although I'm not quite sure if we really found out for sure at the end the definite fates of the Ushers. While I'm not sure exactly how I feel about it, I know that it did keep me reading and needing to know what was going to happen. And now after reading this, I must say I am going to want to go back and read that story as well. I've actually not read the Edgar Allan Poe story that it's based on The Fall of the House of Usher, but have read other Poe stories and so was definitely intrigued. I had been hearing so much about it that I've been excited for when it would come time on my TBR list to read it. Thanks again to Greenwillow Books and Edelweiss for allowing me to read an e-galley of this title. As always, I will not spoil anything related to the ending of the book or anything like that, but I will bring up the plot a little. Something that would be easy to read but also cozy. I have been wanting to read classic hero's journeys, quests, and tropey fantasy lately. Pawn of Prophecy was what my randomizer chose, and so here we are. So I made a list that included the Drenai series by David Gemmell, the Earthsea Trilogy by Ursula Leguin, the Riftwar Saga, the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series by Tadd Williams (I've read the first book), and obviously, the Belgariad. I've been wanting to go back and explore these books. I am currently working through The Wheel of Time, an undertaking that I did not imagine taking this long (only 4 books left!). Despite that, I missed out on some of the older books, the "classics," if you will. I grew up on Harry Potter, Eragon, Percy Jackson, The Beyonders (by Brandon Mull, this book series is super underrated), and anything Middle-Earth related. But I did not really dive into the genre until I was much older. Hello, my fellow travelers, I am back with another book review for you all! Growing up with fantasy was interesting for me. Disclaimer: This is a long one, guys, sorry. So I had this idea to write this book about a woman who finds this dog, and I wanted it to be a book about grief. She dealt with anxiety, she couldn’t hold down a job, and this was somebody who was very driven prior to this happening. It was kind of baffling to me it was this horrible ripple effect where her entire life just imploded after this thing. I didn’t know at the time, but what she was struggling with was actually called complicated grief or extended bereavement. Two years after his death, she was very much still broken. I had a friend who I was very, very close to and her husband died. So, how did it end up being the second in the series?ĪBBY JIMENEZ: Not the idea I actually wrote that book first.
